FAQ’s about Yunnan

Have more questions? Contact us.

Will I get altitude sickness in Yunnan?
It is a common concern, but entirely manageable! While cities like Kunming and Dali sit at a comfortable 1,900 meters (6,200 ft), Shangri-La reaches over 3,100 meters (10,000 ft). This is why our itineraries are expertly paced. We gradually move you up in elevation over several days so your body acclimatizes naturally. Our guides are also fully equipped with portable oxygen and monitor you closely so you can enjoy the views with zero stress.
When is the best time to visit?
Yunnan is famously known as the "Spring City" region because the weather is mild year-round. However, the absolute best times for clear, blue skies and mountain views are Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November). If you want to see the Yuanyang Rice Terraces filled with water reflecting the sun, visit between December and March.
Is there a lot of hiking involved?
Your trip can be as active or relaxed as you want it to be. If you want to tackle the two-day trek through Tiger Leaping Gorge, we have expert mountain guides ready. If you prefer to take a scenic cable car up Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and enjoy a leisurely stroll through Lijiang Ancient Town, we arrange comfortable, VIP transport right to the scenic spots.
What is the food like?
Yunnan food is fresh, incredibly diverse, and utilizes wild mushrooms, mountain herbs, and distinct spices. You absolutely must try the region's famous signature dish: "Crossing the Bridge Noodles" (Guoqiao Mixian). It’s a piping hot, savory chicken broth where you cook raw meats, quail eggs, and fresh vegetables right at your table. It is delicious, non-spicy, and perfect for warming up in the mountain air.
How do we travel between the ancient towns?
The distances between Kunming, Dali, Lijiang, and Shangri-La are significant. To maximize your vacation time, our tours utilize China's cutting-edge high-speed bullet trains between major hubs, and comfortable, private, air-conditioned vans with experienced mountain drivers for the scenic routes.
