Hangzhou

Hangzhou

Step Into a Living Chinese Scroll Painting There is an ancient Chinese proverb: "Up above there is heaven; down below there are Suzhou and Hangzhou." Once you stand on the misty shores of West Lake, you will understand exactly why. Hangzhou offers the ultimate escape into classical Chinese beauty, where weeping willows line the water, ancient stone bridges arch over lotus ponds, and hidden pagodas peek through the rolling, green hills. But there is more to this city than just the lake. Venture into the lush mountains to wander through the sprawling Longjing (Dragon Well) Tea Terraces, where you can sip the world’s most sought-after green tea right where it’s grown. Discover profound peace at the 1,600-year-old Lingyin Temple, one of the largest and wealthiest Buddhist temples in China. Perfect for couples, tea lovers, and anyone looking to experience the serene, poetic soul of ancient China without sacrificing world-class, modern comforts.

FAQ’s about Hangzhou

Is Hangzhou just a day trip from Shanghai?
While it can be done in a day (the high-speed bullet train takes under an hour!), we highly recommend spending at least two to three days here. West Lake alone is massive, and rushing through the tea villages, the Grand Canal, and the ancient temples in a single afternoon means missing the peaceful, laid-back magic that makes Hangzhou so famous.
When is the absolute best time to visit?
Spring (March to May) is the undisputed champion. The weather is spectacular, the peach blossoms around West Lake are blooming, and most importantly, it is the spring tea harvest season in the Longjing villages. Autumn (September to November) is also gorgeous, offering clear skies and the sweet scent of osmanthus flowers everywhere you go.
Is West Lake easy to walk around?
The perimeter of West Lake is about 15 kilometers (9 miles). While you can walk sections of it, the best way to experience it is exactly how our tours are designed: a mix of private wooden boat rides across the water, eco-cart rides, and guided strolls along the most scenic causeways to save your energy.
What is the food like in Hangzhou?
Hangzhou cuisine is famous for being fresh, delicate, and slightly sweet, focusing on bringing out the natural flavors of the ingredients. You absolutely must try the Dongpo Pork (melt-in-your-mouth braised pork belly) and Beggars’ Chicken (chicken wrapped in lotus leaves and baked in clay).
Do I need to be a tea expert to enjoy the tea villages?
Not at all! Visiting the Longjing tea plantations is an incredible cultural and visual experience. Our local guides will walk you through the terraced hills, explain the centuries-old roasting process, and arrange a private tasting in a local farmer's courtyard. It is a highlight for almost every traveler.
